Sri Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar (Punjab)

Sri Harmandir Sahib (or Darbar Sahib) informally referred to as The Golden Temple, is culturally the most significant shrine of the Sikhs and one of the oldest Sikh Gurudwara. It is located in the city of Amritsar, which was established by Guru Ram Das, the fourth guru of the Sikhs and is known as "guru di nagri" meaning city of the Sikh Guru.IntroductionThe Harmandir Sahib is considered holy by Sikhs because the eternal Guru of Sikhism, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, is always present inside in it and its construction was mainly intended to build a place of worship for men and women from all walks of life and all religion to come and worship God equally. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib is the holiest literature in the Sikh religion, the tenth Guru of Sikhism, Guru Gobind Singh on 7th October 1708 at Nanded made it the eternal Sikh Guru and the leader of Sikhism. Anywhere in the world where the Guru Granth Sahib is present is equally holy and precious to Sikhs. Amritsar is the location of Harmandir Sahib.HistoryIts name literally meaning, House of God. The fourth Guru of Sikhism, [Guru Ram Das], excavated a tank in 1577 AD which subsequently became known as Amritsar (meaning: Pool of the Nectar of Immortality, giving its name to the city that grew around it. In due course, a splendid Sikh edifice, Harmandir Sahib rose in the middle of this tank and became the supreme centre of Sikhism. Its sanctum came to house the Adi Granth comprising compositions of Sikhi Gurus and other saints considered to have Sikh values and philosophies e.g. Baba Farid, Kabir, etc. The compilation of the Adi Granth was started by the fifth Guru of Sikhism, Guru Arjan Dev Ji.Originally built during 1574 AD, the site of the temple was surrounded by a small lake in a thin forest. The third of the six grand Mughals, emperor Akbar, who visited the third Sikh Guru, Guru Amar Das, at the neighbouring town of Goindval was so impressed by the way of life in the town that he gave a jagir (the land and the revenues of several villages in the vicinity) to the Guru's daughter Bhani as a gift on her marriage to Bhai Jetha, who later became the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das. Guru Ram Das enlarged the lake and built a small township around it. The town was named after Guru Ram Das as "Guru Ka Chak", "Chak Ram Das" or "Ram Das Pura".During the leadership of the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev (1581-1606), the full-fledged Temple was built. In December 1588 the great Muslim Sufi saint of Lahore, Hazrat Mian Mir, who was a close friend of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, initiated the construction of the temple by laying the first foundation stone (December 1588 AD). A mason then straightened the stone but Guru Arjan Dev told him that, as he had undone the work just completed by the holy man, a disaster might come to the Harmandir Sahib. It was later attacked by the Mughals. The temple was completed in 1604. Guru Arjan Dev, installed the Guru Granth Sahib in it and appointed Baba Buddha Ji as the first Granthi (Reader) of it on August 1604 AD. In the mid 18th century it was attacked by the Afghans, by one of Ahmed Shah Abdali's Generals, Jahan Khan, and had to be substantially rebuilt in the 1760s. However, in response a Sikh Army was sent to hunt down the Afghan force. They were under orders to show no mercy and historical evidence suggests none was shown. Both forces met each other 5 miles outside Amritsar; Jahan Khan's army was destroyed. He himself was decapitated by commander Sardar Dayal Singh. The Harmandir Sahib Complex and areas in its vicinityThe temple is surrounded by a large lake of water, known as the Sarovar which consists of Amrit (Holy Water or Immortal Nectar). There are four entrances to the temple, signifying the importance of acceptance and openness; ostensibly, this concept is reminiscent of the tent of Abraham in the Old Testament -- his tent was open on all four sides in order to be able to welcome travelers from all directions. Inside the temple complex there are many shrines to past Sikh Gurus, Saints and martyrs (see map). There are three holy trees (Bers) each signifiying a historical event or Sikh saint. Inside the temple there many memorial plaques that commemorate past Sikh historical events, saints, martyrs and includes commemorative inscriptions of all the Sikh soldiers who died fighting in World wars one and two. For a new visitor the first recommended place to visit is the information Office highlighted in the map and followed by visiting the Sikh Central museum near the main entrance and clock tower. Anyone who wants to enter the Harmandir Sahib may do so, irrespective of religion, colour, creed or sex. The only restrictions are that the person must not drink alcohol, eat meat or smoke cigarettes or other drugs while in the shrine. Visitors are, as well, expected to dress appropriately and everyone must cover their heads as a sign of respect, remove their shoes and wash their feet in the small pool of water as they enter the Harmandir Sahib premises. Head scarves are provided. All Sikh temples (Gurdwaras) in the world follow this traditional rule that everyone is welcome to enter. There are four doors to get into the Harmandir Sahib, meaning that Harmandir sahib is open to anyone. The Amritsar areaAmritsar is located in the Majha region of the Punjab. Majha is also known as the Bari Doab, since it is the Doab (Do = two, ab = rivers) or the (fluvial) tract of land which lies between two of the five great rivers of the province, the Ravi and the Beas. As such, Majha lies in the heart of the ancient Punjab region, comprised of Gurdaspur, Batala and Tarn Taran Sahib as well as Amritsar. ...

Guru Nanak Jayanti

India observes “Guru Nanak Jayanti” or “Gurpurab” on Sunday 17 th Nov 2013, a day which marks the birth anniversary of “Guru Nanak,” the founder of Sikhism and the first of the 10 Sikh gurus. The date of Guru Nanak Jayanti, considered to be Sikhism’s most sacred festival, varies each year and falls on the full moon, or “Kartik Poornima,” in accordance with the Hindu lunar calendar.

On this day, Sikh devotees typically sing hymns in praise of the Guru, while Gurudwaras, or Sikh temples, organize “Langars,” community meals served without charge to people from all walks of life. Devotees also organize religious processions holding the “Nishan Sahib,” or the Sikh flag, to spread the teachings of the Guru. People performing “Gatka,” a Sikh martial art, is a common site during these processions.

Government offices, schools, colleges and stock markets  are also closed in India on this day.

Maa Kali Of Kalighat Shakti Peetha - Kolkata, West Bengal

Maa Kali Of Kalighat Shakti Peetha - Kolkata, West Bengal

Kalighat Kali Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Maa Kali.

It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Kalighat was a Ghat (landing stage) sacred to Kali on the old course of the Hooghly river (Bhagirathi) in the city of Calcutta. The name Calcutta is said to have been derived from the word Kalighat. The river over a period of time has moved away from the temple. The temple is now on the banks of a small canal called Adi Ganga which connects to the Hoogly. The Adi Ganga was the original course of the river Hoogly (Ganga). Hence the name Adi (original) Ganga Kalighat is regarded as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India, where the various parts of Sati's body are said to have fallen, in the course of Shiva's Rudra Tandava. Kalighat represents the site where the toes of the right foot of Dakshayani or Sati fell. Legend has it that a devotee discovered a luminant ray of light coming from the Bhagirathi river bed, and upon investigating its source came upon a piece of stone carved in the form of a human toe. He also found a Svayambhu Lingam of Nakuleshwar Bhairav nearby, and started worshiping Kaali in the midst of a thick jungle.

Kalighat is also associated with the worship offered to Kali by a Dasanami Monk by name Chowranga Giri, and the Chowringee area of Calcutta is said to have been named after him.

What Is The Goal Of Life?

What Is The Goal of Life?

Very few raises this question. Many slumber in darkness. The objective of life is not the pursuit of physical pleasures, the true object of life is God. Seek Him in the inner cave of your heart. Worship Him with all the fire of your heart's devotion. An ounce of godliness is worth more than million tons of righteous possessions and gains. Truth alone will survive. It is eternal, for Truth is God and God is Truth.

Never Judge Anyone

Heart Touching Story…..With A Nice Moral

A doctor entered the hospital in hurry after being called in for an urgent surgery. He answered the call asap, changed his clothes & went directly to the surgery block.

He found the boy’s father pacing in the hall waiting for the doctor.

On seeing him, the dad yelled: “Why did you take all this time to come?Don’t you know that my son’s life is in danger?Don’t you have any sense of responsibility?”

The doctor smiled & said: “I am sorry, I wasn’t in the hospital & I came as fast as I could after receiving the call…… And now, I wish you’d calm down so that I can do my work”

“Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now, would you calm down?If your own son dies now what will you do??” said the father angrily

The doctor smiled again & replied: “I will say what Job said in the Holy Book “From dust we came & to dust we return, blessed be the name of God”. Doctors cannot prolong lives. Go & intercede for your son, we will do our best by God’s grace”

“Giving advises when we’re not concerned is so easy” Murmured the father.

The surgery took some hours after which the doctor went out happy, “Thank goodness!, your son is saved!” And without waiting for the father’s reply he carried on his way running. “If you have any questions, ask the nurse!!”

“Why is he so arrogant? He couldn’t wait some minutes so that I ask about my son’s state” Commented the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left.

The nurse answered, tears coming down her face: “His son died yesterday in a road accident, he was at the burial when we called him for your son’s surgery. And now that he saved your son’s life, he left running to finish his son’s burial.”

MORAL : Never judge anyone….. because you never know how their life is & what they’re going through”.

Short Story With Great Moral : Trust In God

                TRUST IN GOD

A man just got married and was returning home with his wife. They were crossing a lake in a boat, when suddenly a great storm arose. The man was a warrior, but the woman became very much afraid because it seemed almost hopeless:

The boat was small and the storm was really huge, and any moment they were going to be drowned. But the man sat silently, calm and quiet, as if nothing was happening.

The woman was trembling and she said, “Are you not afraid ?”. This may be our last moment of life! It doesn’t seem that we will be able to reach the other shore. Only some miracle can save us; otherwise death is certain. Are you not afraid? Are you mad or something? Are you a stone or something?

The man laughed and took the sword out of its sheath. The woman was even more puzzled: What he was doing? Then he brought the naked sword close to the woman’s neck, so close that just a small gap was there, it was almost touching her neck.

He said,” Are you afraid ?”

She started to laugh and said,” Why should I be afraid ?,If the sword is in your hands, why I should be afraid?I know you love me.

” He put the sword back and said, This is my answer”. I know God Loves me, and the storm is in His hands

SO WHATSOEVER IS GOING TO HAPPEN IS GOING TO BE GOOD. If we survive, good; if we don’t survive, good ,because everything is in His hands and He cannot do anything wrong.

Moral: Develop Trust. This is the trust which one needs to imbibe. and which is capable of transforming your whole life. Any less won’t do.

Positive Attitude To Put All Problems Down

A professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. He held it up for all to see and asked the students,' How much do you think this glass weighs?'

'50gms!'.... '100gms!'.....'125gms'...the students answered.

What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?

'Nothing' the students said.

'Ok what would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?' the professor asked.

'Your arm would begin to ache' said one of the students.

You're right, now what would happen if I held it for a day?'

'Your arm could go numb, you might have severe muscle stress and paralysis and have to go to hospital for sure!' ventured another student and all the students laughed.

'Very good. But during all this, did the weight of the glass change?’ asked the professor.

'No'

'Then what caused the arm ache and the muscle stress?'

'Put the glass down!' said one of the students.

'Exactly!' said the professor.' Life's problems are something like this. Hold it for a few minutes in your head and they seem OK. Think of them for a long time & they begin to ache. Hold it even longer and they begin to paralyze you.'

It's important to think of the problems in your life, but EVEN more important to 'put them down' at the end of every day before you go to sleep. That way, you are not stressed, you wake up every day fresh and strong & can handle any issue, any challenge that comes your way..

Moral - Every moment thank Sai for whatever good he has given. Put all your problems down in his lotus feet to enjoy the life. His showers of love make even a dumb man talk. Live with Sai, love Sai, he will always be next to you.

Human Birth Is So Wounderful

For each individual, a mission in life is fixed by God. Only those who have grasped their objective in life will succeed. Baba used to comment, "There is nothing wrong in failing to accomplish an objective, but having no objective is a blunder". Trees give us the comfort of cool shade, flowers and fruits, without anticipating anything in return from us. Cows yield milk as a mark of gratitude for the fodder we feed them. Selflessly, the clouds shower rain and the rivers share their waters to irrigate the farm lands. On a deeper analysis, we could understand that every creature in this universe, by one way or other, possess the noble quality of sacrifice. It is not justified if we, the humans, blessed as we are with the power of discretion and intellect, live lazily without any sense of direction or mission in life.

Baba loves us as dearly as He loves every living being in the Universe. Our inner voice of the soul would guide us on the right path to successful living once we know the truth that we should fulfil the definite mission in our lives blessed by the Divine Love and Grace of Baba. The power in our hands can carve out a statue from a stone or leave it as a boulder. So, let us not waste our precious life and keep praying to Baba to help us achieve the definite purpose of our life.

Khaak mujh mein koi Kamaal rakha hai,

"Mere Daata" Mujhe toh tune sambhaal rakha hai.

Mere aibon pe daal ke parda.
Mujhe achhon mein daal rakha hai.

Mera Naata Apne se Jodke,

Tune har musibat ko taal rakha hai.

Main toh kab ki mit gayi hoti.

"SACHE PAATSHAH" Bas teri rehmaton ne mujhe

sambhaal rakha hai!

Barish me kagaz ki naav thi, Har mausam suhana tha... Har khel mein saathi the, Har rishta nibhana tha... Gam ki zuban na hothi thi, Na zakhmo ka paimana tha... Rone ki wajah na thi, Na hasne ka bahana tha... Kyon ho gaye hum itne bade, Isse accha tho.... "Woh bachpan ka zamaana tha"... ~ Let the CHILD in you enjoy freely today... Happy Children's Day...!!

BABA GOLDEN SAYINGS

• Why fear when I am here?

• I am formless and everywhere

• I am in everything and beyond. I fill all space

• All that you see taken together is Myself.

• I do not shake or move

• If one devotes his entire time to me and rests in me, he need fear nothing for body and soul.

• If one sees me and me alone and listens to my Leelas and is devoted to me alone, he will reach God

• My business is to give blessings

• I get angry with none. Will a mother get angry with her children? Will the ocean send back the waters to the several rivers?

• I will take you to the end.

• Surrender completely to God

• If you make me the sole object of your thoughts and aims, you will gain the supreme goal.

• Trust in the Guru fully. That is the only sadhana

• I am the slave of my devotee

• Stay by me and keep quiet. I will do the rest.

• What is our duty? To behave properly. That is enough

• My eye is ever on those who love me • Whatever you do, wherever you may be, always bear this in mind: I am always aware of everything you do.

• I will not allow my devotees to come to harm

• If a devotee is about to fall, I stretch out my hands to support him or her.

• I think of my people day and night. I say their names over and over.

• My treasury is open but no one brings carts to take from it. I say, “Dig!” but no one bothers.

• My people do not come to me of their own accord; it is I who seek and bring them to me.

• All that is seen is my form: ant, fly, prince, and pauper

• However distant my people may be, I draw them to me just as we pull a bird to us with a string tied to its foot

• I love devotion.

• This body is just my house. My guru has long ago taken me away from it

• Those who think that Baba is only in Shirdi have totally failed to know me

• Without my grace, not even a leaf can move

• I look on all with an equal eye

• I cannot do anything without God’s permission

• God has agents everywhere and their powers are vast

• I have to take care of my children day and night and give an account to God of every paisa

• The wise are cheerful and content with their lot in life

• If you are wealthy, be humble. Plants bend when they bear fruit.

• Spend money in charity; be generous and munificent but not extravagant

• Get on with your worldly activities cheerfully, but do not forget God

• Do not kick against the pricks of life

• Whatever creature comes to you, human or otherwise, treat it with consideration

• Do not be obsessed by the importance of wealth

• See the divine in the human being

• Do not bark at people and don’t be aggressive, but put up with others’ complaints

• There is a wall of separation between oneself and others and between you and me. Destroy this wall!

• Give food to the hungry, water to the thirsty, and clothes to the naked. Then God will be pleased

• Saburi (patience) ferries you across to the distant goal

• The four sadhanas and the six Sastras are not necessary. Just has complete trust in your guru: it is enough

• Meditate on me either with form or without form, that is pure bliss

• God is not so far away. He is not in the heavens above, nor in hell below. He is always near you

• If anyone gets angry with another, they wound me to the quick

• If you cannot endure abuse from another, just say a simple word or two, or else leave.

• What do we lose by another’s good fortune? Let us celebrate with them, or strive to emulate them. That should be our desire and determination.

• I stay by the side of whoever repeats my name

• If formless meditation is difficult, then think of my form just as you see it here. With such meditation, the difference between subject and object is lost and the mind dissolves in unity.

• If anyone offends you do not return tit for tat.

• I am the slave of those who hunger and thirst after me and treat everything else as unimportant.

• Whoever makes me the sole object of their love, merges in me like a river in the ocean.

• Look to me and I will look to you.

• What God gives is never exhausted, what man gives never lasts • Be contented and cheerful with what comes.

• My devotees see everything as their Guru.

• Poverty is the highest of riches and a thousand times superior to a king’s wealth.

• Put full faith in God’s providence. • Whoever withdraws their heart from wife, child, and parents and loves me, is my real lover.

• Distinguish right from wrong and be honest, upright and virtuous.

• Do not be obsessed by egotism, imagining that you are the cause of action: everything is due to God.

• If we see all actions as God’s doing, we will be unattached and free from karmic bondage

• Other people’s acts will affect just them. It is only your own deeds that will affect you.

• Do not be idle: work, utter God’s name and read the scriptures.

• If you avoid rivalry and dispute, God will protect you.

• People abuse their own friends and family, but it is only after performing many meritorious acts that one gets a human birth. Why then come to Shirdi and slander people?

• Speak the truth and truth alone.

• No one wants to take from me what I give abundantly

• Do not fight with anyone, nor retaliate, nor slander anyone.

• Harsh words cannot pierce your body. If anybody speaks ill of you, just continue on unperturbed

• Choose friends who will stick to you till the end, through thick and thin. • Meditate on what you read and think of God.

• I give my devotees whatever they ask, until they ask for what I want to give.

• You should not stay for even one second at a place where people are speaking disrespectfully of a saint.

• If you do not want to part with what you have, do not lie and claim that you have nothing, but decline politely saying that circumstances or your own desires prevent you.

• Let us be humble

• Satsang that is associating with the good is good. Dussaya, or associating with evil-minded people, is evil and must be avoided.

• What you sow, you reap. What you give, you get.

• Recognize the existence of the Moral Law as governing results. Then unswervingly follow this Law.

• All gods are one. There is no difference between a Hindu and a Muslim. Mosque and temple are the same.

• Fulfill any promises you have made.

• Death and life are the manifestations of God’s activity. You cannot separate the two. God permeates all.

• Mukti is impossible for those addicted to lust.

• Gain and loss, birth and death are in the hands of God.

• When you see with your inner eye. Then you realize that you are God and not different from Him.

• Avoid unnecessary disputation

• The giver gives, but really he is sowing the seed for later: the gift of a rich harvest.

• Wealth is really a means to work out dharma. If one uses it merely for personal enjoyment, it is vainly spent.

• To God be the praise. I am only the slave of God.

• God will show His love. He is kind to all.

• Whenever you undertake to do something, do it thoroughly or not at all.

• One’s sin will not cease till one falls at the feet of Sadhus

• Be ashamed of your hatred. Give up hatred and be quiet.

• The Moral Law is inexorable, so follow it, observe it, and you will reach your goal: God is the perfection of the Moral Law.

• I am your servants’ servant.

• Always think of God and you will see what He does.

• Have faith and patience. Then I will be always with you wherever you are.

God Is One

Om Sai Ram Poem By Ankit Kapoor

Tere Darshan Ko Tha Main Pyaasa,Tere Naino Ko Dekhne Ki Thi Abhilasha,Bas Yehi Bolna Tha :

Zindagi Me Jo Hoga Ho Jane De,Khud Se Na Dur Kar Baba,Bhale Hi In Saaso Ko Chien Jaane De..

Wo Bhi Daur Yaad Hai,
Jab Dauraa Dauraa Aata Tha,
Kolkata Se Shirdi Aane Ka SAI,
Mai Toh Bus Mauka Chata Tha,

Nov 2012 Se Baba Kya Tujse,
Na Koi Mera Nata Tha,
Jo Tu Mujhe Mere Ghar Na Bulata Tha,
Dekh Ke Mere AASU Tu Kaise Rah Pata Tha..

In Lamhoon Me Tuhi Sirf Jaanta Hai,
Kya Kya Ho Gya Aur Kya Kya Saha Hai Maine..

Fir Bhi Bolunga
